Photograph, black and white showing the Crossing the Line ceremony. This is a naval initiation rite commemorating a sailors first crossing of the Equator. Those who have already done this are known as Sons of Neptune and those who havent are known as Pollywogs. Annotated with 'number 5' on back - this possibly is a reference to the images selected to be used for Alister Hardy's book on the expedition 'Great Waters'. Part of a collection of photographs and archives relating to Alister Hardy 1896-1985, zoologist on the Discovery Oceanographic Expedition 1925-1927.
