Crossing the Line ceremony

Photograph, black and white showing the Crossing the Line ceremony, this is a naval initiation rite commemorating a sailors first crossing of the Equator. The man in the centre of the image with the 'razor' is Dr. Stanley Kemp (leader of the expedition). Annotated with 'number 9' on back - this possibly is a reference to the images selected to be used for Alister Hardy's book on the expedition 'Great Waters'. Annotation from 'Great Waters' for this photograph reads 'The first initiate in the hands of the barber- Dr. Kemp'. Part of a collection of photographs and archives relating to Alister Hardy 1896-1985, zoologist on the Discovery Oceanographic Expedition 1925-1927.
