Jute Sack dress associated with mock wedding tradition
Jute sack dress presented to Moira Edwards in late 1961 before her wedding to Ian Stalker (Jan 1962). Moira worked at the British Jute Trade Research Laboratory in Dundee as a research chemist. This is part of the mock wedding tradition seen in the mills, as part of their pre-wedding fun and games. Brides would be dressed up (often as the wedding party including the groom) and paraded through the mills and streets.Sack has holes cut for arms and head and is decorated with drawings in coloured pens. Front is inscribed "Moira loves Ian" and hearts etc, the back has items relating to the couple. Moira played hockey, Ian played rugby and they had a tandem bicycle and went hostelling for their honeymoon.
