Lt. R. W. Skelton\'s skis
Pair of skis, wooden belonging to Lieutenant Reginald Skelton (chief engineer) and used as part of the National Antarctic Expedition 1901-1904. Made from dark, varnished wood with carved decoration, reading "Lt. R.W. Skelton's snow skis". The right hand ski shows evidence of a repair, perhaps undertaken in Antarctica where a policy of 'make do and mend' was vital. Also bears maker's mark which reads Skis/ Toboggans/ Decoys/ Peterborough/ Canoe Company Limited/ Canada. Inscriptions stamped above foot plates on both skis reads, "J/O/J/(?) A80/ ASH. Stamped on rubber foot plates "Peterborough".
