Manual of Illumination owned by Charles Phillips

Book, brown cloth cover with embossed surface and gold lettering, entitled 'Manual of Illumination' by J W Bradley BA and T G Goodwin BA, this publication gives instruction in decorative writing. Inside the book we can see handwritten notes by Phillips which reads, ‘Useful book in the library Practical Writing by F Scott Mitchell’. Part of a collection of paintings, etchings and personal effects relating to Charles Gustav Phillips, a prolific Dundee artist and for many years the treasurer of Ward Road Baptist Church, Dundee. Phillips worked in a variety of media: oils, watercolour and etchings and was particularly known for his landscapes and townscapes of Dundee and the surrounding areas. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in 1944 at the age of 80 and his work was bequeathed to Dundee Heritage Trust in 2002 by his son William S Phillips.
