Original Dimensions and Wood Specifications Plan for SY Discovery

Original SY Discovery blueprint produced by the Dundee Shipbuilding Company, dating to c. 1900. The document is a plan of the ship's dimensions and wood specifications, and includes a diagram of a cross section of the hull. ''Proposed Antarctic Exploring Vessel'' is written at the top of the plan. A series of dimensions are noted beneath this. The plan's scale is 1/4 inch equates to 1 foot. Part of a set of three plans, preserved by Harry Smith, a draughtsman who worked at the Goole shipyard in Yorkshire from 1936 until its closure in the 1980s. These blueprints were sent to Goole when its sister shipyard in Dundee closed and when subsequently the Goole office was wound down staff were forced to destroy all company records. Fortunately Mr Smith came across the plans, and recognising their significance, took them home for safe keeping where they remained until his death and were passed down to his daughter.
