Portrait of C A Phillips

Painting, oil painting, probably of C. A. Phillips, the artist’s father, was a notable sea captain trading in and around South America. It is unclear whether this piece was painted by Charles G. L. Phillips himself or by a commercial artist. However, the board on which the piece is painted and the label on the back advertising ‘H. Moore's, A1 Portrait Rooms’, suggests that perhaps there is an old photograph lurking underneath the portrait. Part of a collection of paintings, etchings and personal effects relating to Charles Gustav Phillips, a prolific Dundee artist. Phillips worked in a variety of media: oils, watercolour and etchings and was particularly known for his landscapes and townscapes of Dundee and the surrounding areas. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in 1944 at the age of 80 and his work was bequeathed to Dundee Heritage Trust in 2002 by his son William S Phillips.
