Royal Inspection of New Research Ship'

Caption reads, 'The Research Ship, Discovery II left St. Katharine's Dock, on her voyage to the Antarctic to carry out investigations in connection with the whaling industry. Note the crow's-nest and searchlight on the foremast'. The photo was taken as part of a double page spread. Discovery II was one of the vessels used as part of the Discovery Investigations 1924-1951, a series of scientific investigations into the biology of whales in the Southern Ocean.
