Sledging pannikin

Pannikin, metal (aluminum), the number '8' marked on the base of the object. Used in Antarctica but expedition unknown. Pannikins were used for both eating and drinking on sledging journeys. They were made of aluminum as this was lighter and less fragile than traditional china however the pannikins had to be warmed before use as if still cold would damage a sledgers lips.
