Southern Party 1911, Terra Nova expedition

Postcard, souvenir postcard featuring a black and white photograph of the Southern Party, at the foot of Mount Erebus, leaving for the Great Ice Barrier on a depot-laying mission. Taken by Herbert Ponting as part of the Terra Nova Expedition 1910-1912, dated 27th January 1911. These catches of food would be used to supply the various journeys planned for the following year. Standing from left to right are: Thomas Crean (petty officer), Patrick Keohane (petty officer), Tryggve Gran (ski expert), Robert Falcon Scott (Captain), Robert Forde (Petty Officer), Cecil H. Meares (in charge of the dogs), Apsley Cherry-Garrard (Assistant zoologist) and Lawrence Oates (Captain Inisklling Dragoons).
