Circular badge, Space Mission Patch taken from STS-51L, a mission to launch satellite on board SS Challenger, 28 January 1986. This badge bears image of shuttle, 'stars and stripes' and the Earth's globe behind. Names of the crew around the edge. This was the 25th flight of the American Space Shuttle program, for satellite deployment and disastrous final mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger. A structural failure during its ascent phase 73 seconds after launch on January 28th, from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex, 39 killed , all seven crew members- Commander Dick Scobee, Pilot Michael J Smith, Mission Specialists Ellison S. Onizuka, Judith A. Resnick and Ronald E. McNair, Payload Specialists Gregory Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe, and destroyed the orbiter.
