The Holy Bible given to a 12 year old C.G.L Phillips

Book, The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments. Bound in black leather with brass corner reinforcements and clasp, published in 1846. Bears a decorative inscription by a 12 year old Charles Phillips, dated 25 December 1875 this was possibly a Christmas gift. Part of a collection of paintings, etchings and personal effects relating to Charles Gustav Phillips, a prolific Dundee artist and for many years the treasurer of Ward Road Baptist Church, Dundee. Phillips worked in a variety of media: oils, watercolour and etchings and was particularly known for his landscapes and townscapes of Dundee and the surrounding areas. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in 1944 at the age of 80 and his work was bequeathed to Dundee Heritage Trust in 2002 by his son William S Phillips.
