World War I Dog Tag relating to Thomas Whitfield
Dog Tag, belonging to Thomas Whitfield and relating to his service during World War I. Whitfield has previously been stoker on board Discovery during the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-1904. This is made from a lightweight metal and stamped with his name, blood type, officer number and religion. It is marked ' T. Whitfield, O N, 149832, C E, CH ST'. Whitfield left the Navy in 1911 but was recalled to active service in 1914 following the outbreak if the First World War. He retired to Hampshire and died in 1942.
