'Pictorial Art' Book presented to Charles G.L. Phillips

Book, 'Pictorial Art' by the Rev. R. St. John Tyrwhitt M.A., presented to Charles G.L. Phillips as third grade prize for 'success in the advanced section of the course of instruction in art' at the school of Art, Dundee, 1882. Bound in dark red leather embossed with decorative pattern and gold embossed insignia V.R and crown.

Charles Gustav Phillips was a prolific Dundee artist. Phillips worked in a variety of media: oils, watercolour and etchings and was particularly known for his landscapes and townscapes of Dundee and the surrounding areas. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in 1944 at the age of 80 and his work was bequeathed to Dundee Heritage Trust in 2002 by his son William S Phillips.
