Cropping (shearing) machine

Cropping (shearing) machine: made by A.F. Craig and Co., Dundee. Cropping is the first mechanical operation in the finishing department. After the woven jute leaves the loom, it is subjected to inspection with any faults repaired. It is then passed through a cropping machine which removes all the projecting fibres from the surface of the cloth, leaving a smart, lustrous and clean appearance. This was an essential process for all the finer classes of jute goods such as hessians and top quality carpet backing but would have been done for coarse sackings.
