"Discovery's" harmonium

Harmonium with relief carving, incised decoration, fretwork, turned pillars and handles and 'mouse-proof pedals'. Made by Wilcox & White, Meriden, Connecticut, U.S.A. It was through the earnest efforts of the Rt. Rev. Bishop Harper, Anglican Bishop of Christchurch, the editor of the Lyttelton Times, that the funds were raised to procure the organ, and consequently bears a sliver presentational plaque which reads, Presented by the citizens of Christchurch, New Zealand, to the "Discovery" for the Antarctic Expedition Aug 1901 Sep 1904. It was normally played by Lieutenant Royds and was used both for entertainment and for the Sunday religious services. It survives in remarkably good condition considering it frequently fell over in rough seas. It was subsequently presented by the officers of "Discovery" to the men of Naval House on September 1904.
