Gaia 3.75 Edition 1 of 5 a limited edition sculpture by artist Luke Jerram.

Gaia 3.75 Edition 1 of 5 a limited edition sculpture by internationally renowned environmental artist Luke Jerram.
Gaia is an artwork of the Earth (in Greek mythology Gaia is the personification of the Earth) by internationally renowned environmental artist Luke Jerram.
Created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earths surface, the artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet, floating in three dimensions. The installation aims to create a sense of the Overview Effect, a cognitive shift in the way astronauts feel about the planet after viewing it from space - feeling awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.
Gaia was first created in 2018 and this is one of the limited edition (of 5) 3.75m versions. This limited edition was created for DHT with work starting in June 2021 and completed in September 2021

Fabricated in Bristol, Gaia is 3.75 metres in diameter, weighs 17.5kg and is air filled. A 220v internal fan keeps the Earth inflated, whilst a 220v set of LED lamps internally illuminate it. The work is made of fire resistant white fabric with the high-resolution imagery printed onto its surface and is incredibly strong. The material is slightly porous, so to keep it inflated, a small fan is embedded into the North Pole, which continually pumps air inside 24 hours a day.
As part of the installation a 29 minute composition of surround sound, specially made for the installation, by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award willing composer Dan Jones is played on a loop to give a full sensory experience.
Luke Jerrams multidisciplinary practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations and live arts projects. Living in the UK but working internationally for 20 years, Jerram has created a number of extraordinary art projects which have excited and inspired people around the globe. The artist is interested in science and in raising issues around the global environmental challenges humanity faces.

As Luke Jerram says I hope visitors to Gaia get to see the Earth as if from space; an incredibly beautiful and precious place. An ecosystem we urgently need to look after our only home.
