Replica plaque from Trygge Gran North Sea Crossing Memorial

Plaque, replica of yjay which stands at the memorial of Gran at Cruden Bay. It reads, 'From the Sands of Cruden Bay on 30th July 1914 the Norwegian Aviator Kommander Tryggve Gran DFC made the first crossing of the North Sea by Air'. Part of a collection of three items relating to Reverend Charles Miller, minister of Cruden Bay Parish Church 1965-1973 and later Fowlis and Liff Church, Dundee. All associated with Tryggve Gran, Norwegian adventurer and ski expert upon the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) who made the first flight across the North Sea from Cruden Bay to Stavanger on 30th July 1914. Reverend Miller discovered this whilst at Cruden Church and in 1971 was able to organise for Gran to stay with the Reverend and his family. After the community established a memorial to Gran and the crossing which is still at Cruden Bay today.
