Sextant used by Captain Robert Lumsden

Sextant, associated with Captain Robert Lumsden Wood who travelled to Antarctica in the 1950s. Sextants are used to measure the angle between any visible objects. It is primarily used to determine the angle between celestial objects and the horizon which is known as the objects altitude and is necessary for fixing a ship's position in navigation. Stored in a wooden box with a handmade canvas cover, this sextant is made by 'Husun' a collaboration between Kelvin, Bottomley and Baird and Henry Hughs and Sons. Dated 29/08/1945. Serial number- 49085 a spare eyes pieces and pin stored in box. Label tied to box by brass handle reads 'Captain R.L. Wood, Passenger, Dundee Scotland'.
