Composite for greeting\'s card

Painting, watercolour composite for a greeting's card for Valentines of Dundee by Charles G.L. Phillips. Valentines was a well-known photographic postcard business funded in Dundee in 1860 which produced topographical views, usually concentrating on the tourist areas of Scotland. Valentines diversified into greetings cards between 1910 and 1914 during a price war with German postcard publishers. The company remained in Dundee until 1994 when it was sold to the Hallmark Company. Part of a collection of paintings, etchings and personal effects relating to Charles Gustav Phillips, a prolific Dundee artist. Phillips worked in a variety of media: oils, watercolour and etchings and was particularly known for his landscapes and townscapes of Dundee and the surrounding areas. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in 1944 at the age of 80 and his work was bequeathed to Dundee Heritage Trust in 2002 by his son William S Phillips.
