Etching of The Vault, Dundee

Etching, framed and glazed, entitled "The Vault, Dundee", by Charles G.L. Phillips. Located where the Caird Hall, Council Chambers and City Square now stand, the Vault was once an overcrowded maze of closes and tenements. So named because it was originally the kirkyard of St Clement’s Church. On the right of the etching through the gate posts stood Strathmartine Lodging, a once fashionable town house. Today nothing remains of this scene. Part of a collection of paintings, etchings and personal effects relating to Charles Gustav Phillips, a prolific Dundee artist. Phillips worked in a variety of media: oils, watercolour and etchings and was particularly known for his landscapes and townscapes of Dundee and the surrounding areas. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in 1944 at the age of 80 and his work was bequeathed to Dundee Heritage Trust in 2002 by his son William S Phillips.
