Dear Hilda, We have finally made it. It is rally hard to believe we are truly here and the main objective has begun. Weather has been kind and has not got colder than about -15C yet. Mind you we've had some pretty strong winds as well which certainly adds to the wind chill. you will be pleased to know that i have been wearing the blue sweater and a St. Andrews Wolen Mill scarf continnually now during the 21 weeks of unloading. I can't thank you enough. The hut is up and all stores are ashore. The ship leaves tomorrow. From one of our windows we can see Erebus, a 13000 ft high active volcano with its smoking continually blending with the wind blown snow and cloud. seals and penguins literally come to our door. Antarctica is a magnificent place. I am looking forward the year ahead. hope all is well at home, Sincerely Gareth Wood.
Part of a collection of items associated with the 1984-86 Antarctic Expedition "in the footsteps of Scott" donated from Helen Symington who along with her sister, Hilda Ford (a Senior Sister at King Edward VIII Hospital), knitted Arran sweaters for the crew who went out.
