Iceberg off Cape Adare, Jan 9, 1902

Watercolour, created by Dr Edward Wilson (assistant surgeon, zoologist and artist) whilst on the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-1904, showing a large Iceberg. Contains a caption handwritten in pencil by Wilson in the centre of the bottom section of the painting which reads, ‘Iceberg of Cape Adare’, dated 9th January 1902. During the winter months Wilson spent much of his time in the hut working up his sketches. He was a talented and gifted artist. When working outside in freezing temperatures he could not use brush, watercolour or paint. He therefore used pencil, making detailed sketches on the spot which were redrawn in much fuller detail, before being coloured in the Hut, by the aid of acetylene light.
