Oil Painting of the Dundee Harbour

Painting, oil painting framed and glazed, entitled "Dundee Harbour", by Charles G.L. Phillips. Here Phillips has pictured the King William IV Dock, with the distinctive triangular roof of the Observation tower and Harbour Masters Office visible to the left of this painting. The sea has long had a deep-rooted connection to Dundee, with the city ideally located on shipping routes to and from the Baltic and North European ports. Consequently, the harbour became a core component to the flax, jute and whaling industries, and grew rapidly both in size and importance. Unfortunately, by the time Phillips painted this scene both sea trade and the harbour had long been in decline. Part of a collection of paintings, etchings and personal effects relating to Charles Gustav Phillips, a prolific Dundee artist. Phillips worked in a variety of media: oils, watercolour and etchings and was particularly known for his landscapes and townscapes of Dundee and the surrounding areas. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in 1944 at the age of 80 and his work was bequeathed to Dundee Heritage Trust in 2002 by his son William S Phillips.
