Sledging hat

Hat, sledging hat with size label in envelope (attached). Used for protection from the sun during summer sledging expeditions. However this caused other problems, as Edward Wilson (scientific staff onboard both the Discovery and Terra Nova Expeditions) stated, ' the cold in the shade under (the hats) was such that our moustaches and whiskers all became frosted and covered in ice making one's lips and nostrils sting and tingle very painfully' (Diary extract dated 27th Jan 1903).
