The Cape Crozier party before journey
Slide, lantern slide depicting a black and white image of (left to right) Lieutenant Henry Bowers, Edward Wilson (chief of scientific staff) and Apsley Cherry-Gerrard (assistant zoologist) setting out to Cape Crozier to study a breeding colony of Emperor Penguins on 27th June 1911.The journey was described by Cherry-Gerrard as 'the worst journey in the world', with a temperature of - 61oC. They survived and returned with three penguin eggs intact. Part of a collection of fifty eight slides depicting scenes from various Antarctic expeditions.
