Watercolour entitled 'Dundee from Tayport'

Painting, watercolour framed and glazed, entitled "Dundee from Tayport, 1891", by Charles G.L. Phillips. Dundee, visible here to the right of the painting, is captured by Philips from the perspective of the historic harbour town of Tayport situated across the river Tay in Fife. Originally called Ferryport-on-Craig until a railway company included the town in the route for their railway ferry service from Edinburgh to Aberdeen in 1851. They called the town Tayport and the simpler name stuck. This railway and ferry service remained the only way into Dundee until the Tay Road Bridge was built in 1966. To the rear of the painting the masts of ships held in Tayport Harbour are clearly visible.Part of a collection of paintings, etchings and personal effects relating to Charles Gustav Phillips, a prolific Dundee artist. Phillips worked in a variety of media: oils, watercolour and etchings and was particularly known for his landscapes and townscapes of Dundee and the surrounding areas. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in 1944 at the age of 80 and his work was bequeathed to Dundee Heritage Trust in 2002 by his son William S Phillips.
