Watercolour entitled The Greenmarket

Painting, watercolour, entitled "The Greenmarket, Dundee", by Charles G.L. Phillips. Open air markets were held in the Greenmarket every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. There were stalls selling sweets, pots and pans and second hand clothes. Organ grinders provided entertainment while the 'buster' stands sold peas and 'long tatties' (chips). It was a popular place for Dundonians to visit, especially on a Saturday night. Part of a collection of paintings, etchings and personal effects relating to Charles Gustav Phillips, a prolific Dundee artist. Phillips worked in a variety of media: oils, watercolour and etchings and was particularly known for his landscapes and townscapes of Dundee and the surrounding areas. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in 1944 at the age of 80 and his work was bequeathed to Dundee Heritage Trust in 2002 by his son William S Phillips.
