Section of caulking

Caulking section. Made from hammering sections of rope impregnated with tar into the gaps between the planks. This a section of compacted oakum impregnated with a tar-like substance. The outer lengths of oakum have separated from the central impregnated section in some areas along the length of the object. Originally installed in the ship during the 1924 refit, this caulking was taken from the Starboard Hull side planking G1 of Discovery during restoration.
