Letter -Markham over doubts re. Shackleton's expedition

Letter, typewritten copy, written by Sir Clements Markham (President of the Royal Geographical Society) marked private and confidential, for the Council of the Royal Geographical Society on the subject of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his planned 1914 expedition (Endurance). Markham was angered by an article Shackleton had written in 'The Times' about his upcoming expedition, when he had described it as the 'biggest polar journey ever attempted'. Markham felt this was disrespectful to those who had made polar attempts without dogs and thought Shackleton was just trying to reach the South Pole for fame and not with the aim of achieving scientific research. Signed Clement R. Markham, 1914.
