Photograph, black and white mounted in a wooden frame, it depicts the headstone erected on Ernest Shackleton's grave, Grytviken, South Georgia. Ernest Shackleton died during the Shackleton – Rowett Expedition. This journey had aimed to explore the Beaufort Sea sector of the Arctic Ocean but the ship was inadequate for the task and progressed slowly. Shackleton died of heart failure onboard the Quest ship on 4 January 1922. A rough cross had marked his grave in South Georgia until 1928 when this granite column was erected.
