The launching of the James Caird from Elephant island

Slide, lantern slide depicting a black and white drawing of the launching of the James Caird from Elephant Island as part of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-1915. The James Caird was an open boat, named after the Dundee jute baron a main sponsor of the expedition, which aimed to reach South Georgia 800 nautical miles away across the stormiest seas in the world, in order to save the rest of the party trapped on Elephant Island after the loss of the ship Endurance. This was described as one of the most incredible small boat journeys of all time. Part of a collection of fifty eight slides depicting scenes from various Antarctic expeditions.
