Captain Scott\'s rifle

Rifle, a 22 Martini- Action takedown rifle no. 010761, with a 26 inch (660 mm) barrel presented to Captain Robert Falcon Scott by its makers W.W. Greener. Plain frame and stocks but bears a silver inset reading To the crew of the Discovery- From W.W. G., 1901. Top of the barrel is inscribed 'W.W Greener, Birmingham, Club Rifle 22 Rim Fire 010761'. The serial number '010761' and 'J1069' are also inscribed on the bottom section next to the trigger. Black powder proof. Rifles like this one were used to kill animals for food but could also be used by the men in outdoor pursuits such as target practice. Shooting during this period was considered a highly desirable sport and most of the officers engaged in shooting birds.
