Discovery Exhibition

Catalogue, illustrated relating to the ‘Discovery/Antarctic Exhibition’ held at Bruton Galleries, 13 Bruton Street, Bond Street, costing one shilling. On display were more than 200 original sketches and watercolours by Edward Wilson, 175 photographs by Reginald Skelton and many articles used by members of the expedition. These ranged from clothing to the remains of the last sledge dog, sold to settle expedition debts. As well as detailed lists of the exhibits, the crew and a variety of adverts this catalogue also contains a variety of black and white images relating to the Discovery Expedition. Including:
1.Unidentified crew member with meteorological equipment outside the Discovery, entitled ‘The Meteorological Screen’.
2. Crew in the mess for Christmas dinner, entitled ‘No's 2 and 4 Messes at their Christmas Dinner. Antarctic Christmas, 21st June 1902’.
3. William Weller (dog handler) with a harpoon in the ice, entitled ‘Waiting to Harpoon a seal- Weller A.B. In a fish trap shelter’.
4. View of the ship, captioned ‘S.Y. Discovery just arrived in Winter Quarters Bay’.
5. Three officers stood on the ice in full sledging outfits. Entitled ‘The Southern Sledge Party’,. From left to right: Earnest Shackleton, Robert Falcon Scott and Edward Wilson.
6. Officers and crew in full sledging outfits outside the Discovery. Image captioned, ‘Start of Southern Depot Party, 1902. Assisted for the 1st day out by the rest of the ship’s company.
7. Penguin rookery entitled, ‘Emperor Penguin Rookery captured on sea-ice near Cape Crozier. The edge of the Great Ice Barrier is visible in the background’.
8. The head of a Ross Seal.
9. Two unidentified crew members and dog, image captioned ‘Hummocky sea-ice near Pram Point’.
10. The half way tent
11. Thomas Hodgson pulling a sledge, image captioned ‘The Biologist on his Daily Rounds’.
The inside cover of the catalogue features signatures of ‘Shackles’ (Earnest Shackleton), Michael Barne (Second Lieutenant), Hartley Ferrar (Geologist) and Captain Robert Falcon Scott.
