Grog tub from Discovery

Grog Tub, from the Discovery with lid and wooden handle. Made from oak with four brass straps running around the side of the tub and attached in brass lettering the words, ‘God Save The King’. Plaque on the front reads ‘Presented to the Discovery by Hines & Co’. Naval custom meant that the men were served grog, a mixture of rum and water, from this tub each day after their meal at 1pm. Captain Scott felt that the men would be better without this daily ration but wrote "perhaps some would feel aggrieved if it was stopped and the small daily allowance can do little harm; of course it will be stopped when the sledging comes on”.
