Memorial plaque to Lieutenant Ninnis and Dr X. Mertz

Photograph, black and white, taken from "Discovery II" of memorial plaque to Lieutenant Ninnis and Dr X. Mertz. Both men were in charge of the Greenland dogs as part of Douglas Mawson’s Australian Antarctic Expedition. Ninnis and his dog team disappeared down a large crevasse in the ice, taking the food and tent with them. Whilst Mertz died due to malnutrition days later. Discovery II was one of the vessels used as part of the Discovery Investigations 1924-1951, a series of scientific investigations into the biology of whales in the Southern Ocean.
