Sledging flag of Ferrar

Sledging Flag, framed this belonged to Hartley Ferrar, Discovery's Geologist on the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-1904. Ferrar was the youngest member of the scientific staff, being offered a place in July 1901, one month after graduating from Cambridge. His sledging flag bears the St George's Cross and arm with sword and motto "Ferre Va Ferme", which in French translates to ''The shod horse goes surely'' (the Ferrar family motto). Sledging flags, attached to individual sledges, were used to identify individuals quickly from a distance. This flag has been restored and mounted on a blue background and framed in antique gold.
