Thomas Whitfield's Royal Geographical Society Medal

Medal, Silver Royal Geographical Society medallion presented to Thomas Whitfield, one of the stokers onboard the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-1904. It is a replica of the gold medallion awarded to Captain Scott by the Society, designed by Gilbert Bayes and struck by Allan Wyon. Silver replica medals were awarded to all Scott’s companion officers and crew aboard the Discovery. On one side is the bust of Robert Falcon Scott with the words, ‘To Captain Robert Falcon Scott. RN. CVO. FRGS Commander of the Expedition’ around the edge. On the reverse is an image of Scott with the Discovery in the background and an inset of penguins underneath, with the words ‘Presented by the Royal Geographical Society for Antarctic Discovery’ around the image. Around the edge of the medal are the words, ‘Thomas Whitfield, R.N’.
