Buckram sample
A piece of Buckram, stiffened jute used inside hats and military caps etc. to give shape. Donated by David Wilkie, former employer of Jute Industries. He was 17/18 years old when he joined the mill. He started in auditing but moved on to the practical side in the industrial department. He went into the productiojn side as a Special Trainee, latterly manager, at Manhattan Works. When they started closing places down he went into sales, travelling around twine makers and carpet manufacturers such as Axminster and Wilton.
