Nubev Counting Glass (Shott Gauge)

Counting Glass (Shott Gauge), this particular make was known as a ‘Nubev’ Glass. Made from brass this folding apparatus comprised of a beveled edge marking out an inch, inch, inch and 10 mm and a magnifying glass at the other end. Used in quality control for measuring the number of warp or weft threads in the particular inch cross section or for inspecting the weft and smoothness and roughness of the fabric. This model was seen as an improvement on the traditional cross section glass as the beveled edge casts no shadow allowing every thread to be seen. Produced by Casartelli, Manchester, the middle section is engraved ‘Textile Machinery and Stores, Bombay’. Stored in a handmade leather case with popper fastening.
